Located on the Tennessee/Kentucky border, most of the town of Portland lies in Sumner County, with a small portion located in Robertson County. With a projected completion date of June 2019, the new Interstate 65 interchange at SR109 will certainly boost the economic growth Portland is already experiencing, as it becomes known as the Gateway to Tennessee.
Originally called Richland Station, the area now known as Portland was found to be fertile farmland by the Buntin family. The Buntin family settled in Portland in the early-to-mid 1800's. Thomas Buntin convinced the Louisville and Nashville (L&N) Railroad Company to route the railroad (they were constructing in the 1850's) directly through his property by donating land. Thomas Buntin went on to become the first postmaster of the settlement, and businesses began to establish around the train depot. This area is now known as Main Street. No one knows exactly how or why the name Portland was chosen, but the the city was incorporated by the State of Tennessee in 1905.
Known as the Strawberry Capital of Tennessee, Portland has a history of successful strawberry growers dating all the way back to 1885. The annual Strawberry Festival began in 1940. This is the longest-running festival in Sumner County. Now referred to as the Middle Tennessee Strawberry Festival, the days of activities leading up to the parade brings thousands of people to Portland for loads of family fun!
With the proximity to I-65, Portland is home to several excellent distribution and manufacturing facilities. This is the perfect environment for industrial growth which contributes to the economic stability for this rural area. Couple this with affordable housing, tranquil country living, city parks, restaurants, shopping, even an award wining winery, and you can see that the potential for Portland's growth is unlimited!
